7 Reasons to Love Winter RVing as a Family
Plus, practical tips for a successful winter camping trip.

By: Dom Carson

Winter RVing may not be the first thing that comes to mind when planning family trips, but it offers unique experiences and unforgettable memories. Whether you're exploring snow-covered forests, visiting less-crowded national parks, or cozying up for a movie night in your RV, winter adventures can be truly special. Here are some reasons we love winter RVing as a family. I have also included some practical tips to make it enjoyable and successful when you and your family head out!

1. Escape the Crowds

One of the biggest perks of winter RVing is the solitude. Popular campgrounds and destinations are often quieter during the colder months, allowing your family to experience it in a whole different way. We love heading out to Banff National Park in the winter and we are usually one of only a handful of people camping there (as compared to one of hundreds in the summer months).

Tips for Success:

  • Research campgrounds that stay open year-round. Many national and provincial/state parks offer winter camping options, often with fewer amenities, but just check before you go.
  • Reserve a spot near the bathrooms, so that it’s not too long of a walk out in the cold with your kids.
  • Call ahead to confirm availability and ensure the campground has space for your RV.
  • If you prefer boondocking, check websites like Campendium or iOverlander for free open spaces suitable for winter camping.
  • Pay attention to the weather, make sure there won’t be a ton of snow, which can make it hard to haul your trailer or get into boondocking areas (the national parks campgrounds should be plowed and kept snow-free which is why we love visiting them in the winter!).

2. Enjoy Stunning Scenery

To me, nothing beats the beauty of winter—snow-covered mountains, frozen lakes, and frost-tipped forests are just magic. Winter landscapes offer a fresh perspective on familiar places and make for incredible family photos.

Tips for Success:

  • Pack a quality camera or smartphone to capture the beauty of winter and bring a tripod so you can capture the whole fam!
  • Dress in layers to stay comfortable while exploring or snapping pictures.
  • Take Part in Winter Activities for All Ages
  • From sledding and skating to snowshoeing and building snowmen, winter RVing opens the door for so many family-friendly activities. It’s so easy to feel like a kid again in the winter.

Tips for Success:

  • Bring along snow-friendly gear like sleds, snowshoes, or skis.
  • Research local winter activities near your destination. Many areas offer tours, like dog sledding or winter tubing on the ski hill!
  • Check nearby lakes for any wild ice skating opportunities (just check the ice thickness first to make sure it’s safe!)
  • Find some holiday Christmas light displays to go and see (some continue well into January)!
  • Keep extra gloves, hats, and socks on hand to ensure everyone stays warm and dry.

4. Make Time for Cozy RV Moments

After a day of winter fun, there’s nothing quite like returning to a cozy RV. Whether you’re sipping hot cocoa, playing board games, or watching a family movie, the cozy atmosphere of an RV in winter is hard to beat.

Tips for Success:

  • Invest in a portable space heater to supplement your RV’s heating system..
  • Use insulating window covers and rugs to keep the cold out and the heat in.
  • Plan cozy indoor activities like crafting, read some new books, or curl up to watch a movie. We just watched our first movie ever with our toddler and it was in the RV and she loved it and it turned into such a special memory for us all.

5. Save with Affordable Off-Season Rates

Winter RVing can be easier on the wallet. Many campgrounds and attractions offer off-season rates, making it a budget-friendly option for families.

Tips for Success:

  • Look for deals on winter camping passes or discounted entry fees to parks.
  • Consider free or low-cost boondocking options.
  • Check for memberships or loyalty programs that offer additional savings.

6. Embrace Educational Opportunities

Winter trips can be a fantastic way for kids to learn about nature, weather, and wildlife. Some parks offer winter-specific educational programs.

Tips for Success:

  • Check park websites or visitor centers for information on winter programs.
  • Encourage kids to keep a travel journal or create art inspired by the winter scenery.
  • Bring along field guides to help identify animal tracks or winter birds. Finding and following animal tracks in the snow is one of our favorite things to do.

7. Take the Opportunity to Be More Minimalistic

With less gear and fewer distractions, winter RVing simplifies your travels. It’s an opportunity to focus on quality time together without overpacking or overplanning.

Tips for Success:

  • Pack versatile clothing and gear that can be layered and reused.
  • Create a meal plan with simple, hearty dishes like soups and stews. We like to make things at home that we can just reheat to limit the amount of cooking we do so that we don’t add too much condensation inside.
  • Limit electronic devices and encourage family activities that don’t require screens.

Practical Tips for Winter RVing Success

To make the most of your winter RV adventures, a little extra preparation goes a long way. Here are some key tips to ensure your family stays safe, warm, and happy:

Prepare Your RV for Winter

Winterizing your RV isn’t just for storage. Make sure it’s ready for cold-weather camping by checking seals, insulating windows, and protecting pipes from freezing. Check out this article to learn more about how we dry winter cam and what safety gear we bring.

Pack the Right Gear

Staying warm and comfortable is essential for enjoying winter RVing. Bring thermal blankets, extra sleeping bags, and insulated jackets. Use a boot tray or designated space for wet gear to keep your RV clean and dry (the shower is great for that!).

Plan Your Route Wisely

Winter travel can be unpredictable, so plan ahead to avoid issues. Monitor road conditions and weather forecasts. Stick to main roads that are more likely to be plowed and salted. Keep an emergency kit in your RV with essentials like a shovel, tire chains, and extra food and water.

Stay Flexible

Winter adventures sometimes require a go-with-the-flow attitude. Have backup destinations in case of road closures or extreme weather. Be prepared to extend your stay or cut your trip short if conditions change.

Embrace the Magic of Winter RVing

Winter RVing as a family offers a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and togetherness. With fewer crowds, breathtaking scenery, and cozy moments inside your RV, it’s an experience that’s well worth the extra preparation. By planning ahead and embracing the season, you can create cherished memories that your family will talk about for years to come. I know that our annual winter RV trip is one of our favorite traditions!
