How RVing Makes Travel with Kids SO Much Easier!
Top reasons to love traveling in an RV and camping as a family.
By: Dom Carson
Traveling with kids is always an adventure—but let’s be honest, it can also be a lot of work. Between packing, finding kid-friendly stops, keeping everyone comfortable, and making sure nap times don’t get totally derailed, trips can sometimes feel more stressful than relaxing. BUT, in my opinion, it is so important to get out with our kids and experience the world. Not only for their benefit but for our mental health as parents.
That’s where RVing (in our case, a towable RV) changes the game. Having our 2022 Winnebago Micro Minnie has made traveling with our daughter so much easier, and honestly, I can’t imagine going back to hotels, endless restaurant stops, or cramming everything we need into a single suitcase.

Here’s why we love traveling as a family with our RV:
1. Your Home Away from Home
When you tow a travel trailer or take a trip in a motorhome, you're bringing your own little home wherever you go. That means no unpacking and repacking at every stop, no stressing about whether a hotel has cribs available, and no worrying about whether your kid will sleep in an unfamiliar place. And no leaving favorite blankets or stuffed animals in hotel beds (IYKYK).
Our Winnebago Micro Minnie has dedicated sleeping spaces, a kitchen, a bathroom, and enough room to store all the gear, toys, and snacks we need. Kids thrive on routine, and having a familiar space—even while traveling—helps keep everyone happy and comfortable. (See our mods for making our travel trailer safer for a small child.)

2. No Rushing, No Stress
One of the best parts of traveling in an RV? Total flexibility.
You don’t have to race to the airport, deal with delays, or plan around hotel check-in times. If our daughter is hungry, we pull over and make a meal. If she needs a break from the drive, we can stop and stretch without worrying about finding a rest stop with decent food and clean bathrooms.
We travel at our own pace, which makes everything feel more relaxed. If we find a beautiful lake or a fun campground and want to stay an extra night? No problem. The trailer is already there, ready to go.

3. Save Money Without Sacrificing Comfort
Let’s talk about how much money we save by traveling with a trailer.
- No pricey hotel stays … which also means no dealing with weird check-in times or noisy rooms or hiding and reading in the bathroom for hours after we put our daughter to bed because it’s the only place we can have the light on.
- Home-cooked meals instead of constantly eating out (because let’s be real, getting kids to sit through multiple restaurant meals on a trip is not always fun).
- Campgrounds are way cheaper than resorts and Airbnbs, and a lot of them have amazing family-friendly amenities like playgrounds, pools, and nature trails.

That means we can spend more on the fun parts of the trip (like experiences and adventure activities), and we get to go on even more trips every year because each trip costs less overall. Win win win.
4. Less Packing and More Convenience
Whenever we head out for a trip without our Winnebago Micro Minnie, packing feels sooo much more daunting. With our trailer, most of our gear just stays packed and ready to go.
- Clothes? Already in the trailer.
- Camping gear? Ready to roll.
- Kid stuff like toys, books, and extra diapers? All there, so we’re never scrambling at the last minute.

This makes last-minute trips much easier. We hitch up the trailer, throw in fresh groceries, and we’re on our way. No more trying to shove everything into a couple of suitcases and hoping we didn’t forget something important (which we always used to do).
5. More Family Time, Less Screen Time
There’s something about being in nature that just slows things down and brings the whole family together.
Instead of spending evenings in hotel rooms staring at screens, we’re making s’mores around the campfire, exploring trails, or playing card games inside the trailer on rainy nights. It’s a chance to unplug, be present, and make some pretty amazing memories as a family, and you really can’t beat that.

And during the drive, we actually talk more—especially answering all the questions coming from an engaged and curious kiddo that thrives in nature and on adventures ...

6. Built-In Learning and Adventure
Traveling in an RV isn’t just fun—it’s a learning experience for kids.
They get hands-on time in nature.
They see new places and different ways of life.
They learn problem-solving skills (like helping set up camp or figuring out a hiking route).
Every stop is a chance to explore and learn—without even realizing they’re learning.

7. Pets Come Along for the Ride
If your family includes a four-legged friend, RVs are the best way to travel with pets.
Instead of stressing over finding pet-friendly hotels or boarding your dog while you’re away, they get to come along for the adventure. Most campgrounds are super pet-friendly, and it makes trips so much easier when your furry family member is part of the experience. Staying in campgrounds with power is ideal so that we can run our A/C and ensure that our dogs are comfortable, even in the summer heat. (See a detailed guide for RVing with dogs here.)

If you love to travel but hate the stress of hotels, restaurants, and rigid schedules, an RV like our Winnebago Micro Minnie might be the perfect fit for your family. It gives you all the comforts of home, total flexibility, and a way to experience the outdoors together without sacrificing convenience.
So, if you’re thinking about hitting the road with your little ones, I highly recommend it. Pack up the snacks, grab the adventure gear, hitch up the trailer, and get ready to make some of the best family memories ever. Life is truly just so short and so precious, so please, go make the memories.
